An extremely rare blank stater
Lot 762
WESTERN ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Late 6th-early 5th century BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 10.89 g). Blank. Rev. Rough quadripartite incuse square. BMC -. Müseler -. SNG von Aulock -. Extremely rare. Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Similar staters with blank obverses are known from Lycia (see SNG von Aulock 4083), but they have a much more elaborate and decorated reverse incuse. Perhaps this piece is from Caria instead, where such rough incusa are known primarily from Mylasa (see HN online 209). In any case, it must be an early coin, probably dating to the late 6th century.
